J & A Growers was founded in 2002 in response to the increased demand for UK provenance material. This is now backed up by a greater interest in British grown material due to potential biosecurity risks from imports.

We are the largest growers of Hawthorn in Europe and the biggest producers of hardwoods in the UK. Annual sales now stand around 13 million plants, selling to the wholesale nursery trade in the UK and Europe.

The Warwickshire site was originally chosen for the grade 2, prime sand/silt loam soil. This is perfect for growing good balanced trees with strong stems and fibrous roots. The facilities on site were purpose built especially for nursery production. In 2018 they purchased an additional 100 acres adjoining their present site, this allows a combined cropping of cereals and nursery stock.

J & A Growers are at the forefront of technological innovation, being the first nursery business in the UK to invest in optical steering systems on a tractor. Then in 2014 we were the first to mount a harvesting machine onto a tracked tractor, allowing more harvesting days whilst improving the carbon footprint by doing less damage to the soil structure. We also work in partnership with some of the leading research bodies in the UK, seeking new technical developments.
The crops are grown to a high health status and are routinely inspected by APHA Plant Health inspectors.

We are active members of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) Tree & Hedging Group and Confederation of Foresters (CONFOR) Nursery producers Group. Jamie Dewhurst is past president of The European Forest Nursery Association (EFNA). You can find out more about these organisations and groups by going to the LINKS page.
